The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure: A Feasible Multidisciplinary Outcome Measure for Pediatric Telerehabilitation

Abstract

This study describes the feasibility of using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) as a multidisciplinaryoutcome measure for pediatric telerehabilitation (TR). The COPM was administered at monthly time points over four months. A follow-up survey was conducted with the therapists to assess clinical utility of the COPM. Seventy-three percent of the children seen in TR > one month had at least two administrations of the COPM. Eighty percent of therapists agreed or strongly agreed that the COPM was easy to use in a reasonable amount of time, helped identify functional goals, could be used with various children with varied diagnoses, and measured functional change. In 37 children, the median clinical change in performance and satisfaction was two points or greater on the COPM over the episode of TR. The COPM is a feasible measure perceived positively by pediatric therapists for TR use.

Lynn Tanner, PT is a physical therapist and rehabilitation clinical specialist in oncology at Children’s Minnesota. She received her BA in Child Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1999, her Master’s in Physical Therapy from the Mayo School of Health Related Sciences in 2001, and is pursuing her PhD at the University of Minnesota.  In her current role as a rehabilitation clinical specialist, she provides PT services to the oncology population in the Cancer and Blood Disorders clinic, conducts research investigating peripheral neuropathy and the impact of PT in pediatric oncology, and leads cancer rehabilitation and telerehabilitation program development.  She has published multiple research manuscripts in collaboration with other experts in the field and leads a cancer rehabilitation program development training for other hospitals interested in evidence-based care. She has presented around the country at the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Combined Section Meetings, American Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nursing Association Conferences, Children’s Hospitals Association Leadership Meeting, Children’s Oncology Group meetings, and at local Universities. Honors include the APTA Oncology Jeri F. Walton Award for Service, APTA Emerging Leader Award, Oncology Section Stephen Gudas Award for Outstanding Publication in Rehabilitation Oncology with Dr. Laura Gilchrist, and the Children’s Minnesota Board Quality award.  She was co-creator and chair of the Pediatric Oncology Special Interest Group of the APTA from 2010 to 2014. Currently she serves as the Academy of Oncologic Physical Therapy Balance and Falls Special Interest Group Chair, and is the co-creator and co-chair of the Cancer Rehabilitation Networking Group Pediatric Task Force of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine.
